Three politicians from different regions of the country are to speak at the annual convention of the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada, March 27-31 in Toronto. They are:
— William McKnight, federal minister of Energy, Mines and Resources, who will address the keynote session Monday morning.
— Preston Manning, leader of the Reform Party of Canada, who will be the Monday luncheon speaker. Manning was to have shared the head-table podium with federal Liberal leader Jean Chretien, who is unable to attend. — Frank McKenna, premier of New Brunswick, who will speak at Monday evening’s awards banquet.
In addition, at the Wednesday luncheon, geoscientist J. Tuzo Wilson will be the keynote speaker.
Other activities include a political forum focusing on the Whitehorse Mining Initiative. Described as an attempt to develop a vision of the future of Canadian mining, the forum is the result of a brief presented by the Mining Association of Canada (MAC) at the 1992 Mines Ministers Conference in Whitehorse, Y.T. The MAC was working in concert with the provincial and territorial mining associations and chambers.
The MAC and representatives of the federal, provincial and territorial mines ministries then formed a planning committee which itself consisted of representatives of government, labor, environmental groups and aboriginal organizations.
This committee, which has since met twice, set a 12- to 15-month deadline for its program (not to exceed the autumn, 1994, mines ministers meeting). The political forum is scheduled for 1-2 p.m. Tuesday, March 30.
