PDAC calls for papers

The Prospectors & Developers Association of Canada is soliciting papers for the open session of its annual convention, slated for March 9-12, 2003, in Toronto.

Organizers are looking for policy-related and technical papers on diamonds. Topics include mining finance, geophysical and geochemical practices in areas of active exploration, best-practices guidelines, commodities, and new concepts and technical development (particularly their application in the discovery and definition of mineral deposits).

Abstracts of no more than 200 words should be submitted to Evelyn Liougas, PDAC, 34 King St. E., 9th Floor, Toronto, Ont. M5C 2X8. E-mail: eliougas@pdac.ca

Kalgoorlie hosts conference

The 12th International Symposium on Mine Planning and Equipment Selection will focus on resource estimation as well as open-pit and underground mine planning and design.

The symposium is slated for April 23-25, 2003, and will be held on the Kalgoorlie campus of the Western Australia School of Mines in Kalgoorlie-Boulder, 600 km east of Perth.

Kalgoorlie is the gold and nickel mining and processing capital of Australia, and featurs a large number of active underground and open-pit operations. For more information, e-mail Miriam Way at conference@ausimm.com.au. Web-site: www.ausimm.com

Indonesia attracts suppliers

Mining Indonesia 2003 will welcome hundreds of global mining suppliers that want a share of the US$1 billion spent annually on equipment and services there.

The conference is slated for Oct. 1-4, at the International Exhibition and Conference Centre in Jakarta.

The biennial conference started in 1981. The previous Mining Indonesia, in November 2001, attracted more than 6,500 visitors and 330 exhibitors. Six of these had had national pavilions, including one organized for Canada by the Canadian Association of Mining Equipment and Services for Export.

Chinese market open for business

The Chinese mining market is six times the size of Canada’s, and the China Mining & Coal Expo 2003 will offer companies a chance to tap into it.

China Mining & Coal Expo 2003, slated for Oct. 28-31 in Beijing, marks the 10th edition of the event, which was started in 1985.

More than 10,000 visitors attended each conference, of which about one quarter were involved in mineral production.

In 1998, China was the world’s largest coal producer, with output valued at US$80.2 billion. The U.S. was second with US$56.7 billion.

China Mining & Coal Expo is hosted by an agency representing the Chinese government, whose policymakers plan to increase mineral exploration and research.

The Canadian Association of Mining Equipment and Services for Export is a sponsor and is organizing a Canada Pavilion.
