PCS wins safety award

The New Brunswick division of Potash Corp. of Saskatchewan had the lowest frequency and severity of accidents at a mine site in 2000, and was duly honoured for its achievement at the 31st annual safety awards of the New Brunswick Mining Association (NBMA).

Awards were also handed out to 20 supervisors from various mines.

The ceremony, held in Bathurst, attracted more than 130 industry representatives and was sponsored by the New Brunswick branch of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM).

Since 1990, the number of injuries resulting in lost time incurred by NBMA members has fallen 38%.

Mining is the province is valued at $790 million annually. The industry employs more than 3,000 people and accounts for 3% of New Brunswick exports.
