The Page-Williams gold mine at Hemlo, Ont., surpassed the Campbell m ine in gold production for the 3-month period ended Sept 30.
The Hemlo mine, developed and operated by Lac Minerals but currently the subject of litigation in Ontario’s Court of Appeal (see story, page 3), produced 66,296 oz of gold during the quarter.
The Campbell mine at Balmertown, Ont., owned by Campbell Red Lake Mines and long the biggest gold-producing mine in Canada, produced 57,986 oz during the 3-month period. In 1985 in produced 226,152 oz.
The Campbell mine produced more gold over the first nine months of this year — 168,691 oz compared to 165,475 at the Page-Williams mine — but if both mines duplicate third quarter results in the fourth quarter, Page-Williams will officially supplant Campbell as Canada’s biggest gold mine by more than 5,000 oz.
