Output of zinc, refined lead up

In May 2000, Canada’s production of refined lead, zinc, primary copper and potash increased over May 1999. However, a decrease was reported in the production of gold, silver, refined copper, nickel, primary lead, asbestos and salt.

The figures reflecting these changes are contained in the monthly report Production of Canada’s Leading Minerals, published by the Department of Natural Resources Canada.

Production of refined copper decreased 8%, to 44,392 tonnes from 48,178 tonnes; primary copper increased 3%, to 50,081 tonnes from 48,554 tonnes; while primary nickel fell 3%, to 17,670 tonnes from 18,238 tonnes.

Silver production decreased 21%, to 91,630 kg from 116,000 kg, while gold output fell 14%, to 12.2 million grams from 14.2 million grams.

Primary lead slipped 33%, from 10,522 tonnes to 7,078 tonnes, whereas refined lead climbed to 13,959 tonnes from 11,484 tonnes.

Primary zinc output increased to 68,235 tonnes from 63,021 tonnes, with refined zinc rising 1%, to 66,661 tonnes from 65,941 tonnes.

Canadian mines shipped 3.9 million tonnes of iron ore in May 2000, compared with 3.6 million tonnes in the year-ago period.

Canadian shipments of salt and salt content of brine decreased 5%, to 1.1 million tonnes from 1.2 million tonnes.

Producers’ shipments of asbestos fell 14%, to 24,674 tonnes from 28,675 tonnes.

Canadian shipments of potash increased 15%, from 696,004 tonnes to 799,875 tonnes.
