Orval Gillespie, chairman and chief executive officer of Vancouver-based Globaltex Industries, has died. He was 69.
In the 1950s, Gillespie first worked as a diamond driller in the Maritimes and then moved to Sudbury to carry out contract work.
He later formed his own company, which merged with another to form TXD. TXD operated 15 surface and underground rigs in western Canada.
Throughout the early 1960s, Gillespie managed several juniors with properties in British Columbia.
From 1965 to 1987, Gillespie was president of Carolin Mines, which operated a gold producer 30 km northeast of Hope, B.C. The mine was producing 2,000 tons per day in 1982, though operations were suspended in 1984.
During that same period, Gillespie was also president of Nithex Minerals, which merged with Indian Lake Gold to form New Lintex Minerals. New Lintex then merged with A.L.M. to form Globaltex Industries.
Gillespie is survived by his wife, Diane, and three children.
