A marketing survey headed by SNC-Lavalin has confirmed that several parties are interested in high-quality wollastonite from Orleans Resources’ (ME) St. Onge Twp. property near Lac St. Jean, Que.
The study also determined that some companies are considering using wollastonite in their existing products and in the formulation of new products — if and when a new source of high-quality wollastonite is assured. In addition, the survey concluded that the Orleans’ deposit is well-situated with respect to transportation to major markets in North America and overseas. The company reports that recent pilot plant tests have consistently produced wollastonite concentrates grading up to 99% with a high-aspect ratio. Future work will be focused on increasing the aspect ratio, the efficiency of the pilot plant process and the range of products.
Wollastonite is a white, crystalline mineral used as a reinforcing agent in plastics, as a flux material in steel casting, and as an additive in paint.
