Opawica drills near Kirkland Lake

Junior Opawica Explorations (OPW-T) has begun a diamond drilling program aimed at pulling base metal values from its Maisonville Twp. property, near Kirkland Lake, Ont.

The 6-hole, 1,000-metre campaign is testing a broad horizontal loop electromagnetic (HLEM) conductor that has been traced over a strike length of more than 700 metres. Previous drilling by Kerr Addison Mines (a defunct company taken over by Noranda in 1996) tested a 189-metre section of the conductive zone with five holes, all of which intersected mineralized and altered rhyolite breccia and graphitic sediments. Stockwork sphalerite veining was observed in all five holes, along with minor galena and chalcopyrite mineralization.

Only two of Kerr’s holes were assayed, both of which had been drilled at shallow depths of between 20 and 100 metres:

* Hole 67-1 returned 0.68% zinc over 25.2 metres (including 1.39% zinc over 6.1 metres) and 1.16% zinc over 8.8 metres (including 2.02% zinc over 1.2 metres farther down the hole).

*Hole 67-2 hit 1.76% zinc over 4.6 metres (including 2.35% zinc over 2.1 metres).

Opawica President Dan Clark says the nature of the zinc-rich stockwork mineralization suggests the drilling may be peripheral to a more significant volcanogenic massive sulphide (VMS) system of high-grade copper mineralization at depth or along strike.

The current drilling was preceded by a program of ground magnetic and HLEM surveys. Plans call for additional ground magnetic and HLEM surveys along strike and along the favorable horizon.
