OPAP discovery

A recent base metal discovery northeast of Thunder Bay is being credited to the Ontario Prospectors Assistance Program (OPAP).

According to Bernard Schnieders, the government’s resident geologist for the Hemlo-Schreiber area, the discovery represents “a real OPAP success story.”

Robert Michon and Robert Reukl, two Manitouwadge-area prospectors, applied for a grant under the program to explore their Nagunagisic Lake polymetallic property.

The grant enabled them to carry out a fall drill program to test the downdip extension of a mineralized outcrop.

Two holes hit mineralization, with the first hole intersecting a zone averaging 2.58% zinc, 0.33% lead, 0.04% copper and 0.14 oz. silver per ton across 31 ft. and the second intersecting 3.23% zinc, 0.58% lead, 0.06% copper and 0.18 oz. silver over 52 ft.

Another mineralized outcrop, 1,400 ft. away, remains to be drill-tested. In 1993, Ontario handed out grants of as much as $10,000 each to 240 prospectors, for a total of $2 million.
