Provincial mining officials will remind the public of the important role that minerals play in everyday life when Ontario’s third annual Mining Week gets under way June 1.
As part of a program titled “Minerals Make Our Life Better,” provincial associations are offering students the chance to win an all-expense paid family trip to Sudbury and a tour of Inco and Falconbridge nickel mines. The venue for this year’s event is the Ontario North Now pavilion at Ontario Place in Toronto. Activities include a week-long film festival and hands on educational exhibits provided by the Ministry of Northern Development and Mines.
On display at Ontario Place will be a model of Canada’s Pavilion at the Seville World’s Fair (with its zinc facade), and an item on gold panning. As well, mining communities across the province are marking the occasion by hosting events such as underground tours, treasure hunts and career days. Queen’s University and the Ontario Science Centre will participate. “Mining Week recognizes the vital role the mining industry and minerals play in the social and economic development of Ontario,” says Ontario Mining Association spokesman Peter McBride, who is coordinating the event.
