Ontario is Canada’s largest producer of non-fuel minerals and its 1988 production, valued at $7.2 billion, overshadowed that of all other provinces and regions of the country. More than three-quarters of this value was derived from metal mining. Gold continued to exceed $1 billion in value, despite lower prices.
Most of the province’s top 10 mineral products increased in value last year and Ontario’s nickel production exceeded $2 billion in value for the first time in history.
Structural materials such as cement, clay, lime, sand, gravel and stone accounted for about 18% of Ontario’s production value.
