Ontario mining industry set new record for safety

At the end of 1988, the frequency rate for all injuries requiring medical aid was 18.8, down from the previous record of 19.3 set in 1987. The frequency rate for lost-time injuries was 3.3 per 200,000 employee hours, down 20% from 1987 and breaking the previous record of 3.9 set in 1986.

MAPAO President Graham Ross attributes the improvement to more member companies have instituted the loss control program and its international five star safety rating system. Loss Control is an accident prevention program promoted by MAPAO.

Ross congratulated the diamond drillers and the mine contractors for the lowering of their accident frequency rates. Both sectors have had lost-time rates above the industry average, but improved their performance by an average of almost 30% in 1988.

Ross also commended Denison Mines (TSE), Rio Algom (TSE), Inco Ltd. (TSE) and Falconbridge Ltd. (TSE) for the reductions in the rate of both lost-time and total medical aid injuries they have shown.
