Ontario geologists catch last bus

Additional registration applications in August have brought to 679 the number of Ontario geoscientists registered or applying for membership in the Association of Professional Geoscientists of Ontario (APGO).

APGO had been concerned about a last-minute influx of applications for registration under the province’s Professional Geoscientists Act. Section 3 of the act, which took effect Aug. 30, requires geoscientists practising in Ontario to be registered with the association.

About 2,100 geologists and geophysicists were sent registration packages earlier in the year. The association plans to send those who have not applied for registration a request for confirmation that they will either be registering, not practising geoscience, or practising under one of the act’s exemptions (for example, by holding a valid registration as a professional engineer or surveyor).
