Ontario backing down from Bill 208

In 1974 when workers went on strike here in Elliot Lake, Ont., to have the right to refuse unsafe work, we (workers) were told that this right would be abused. This has not occurred.

Workers do not frivolously refuse unsafe work as we would not frivolously shut down work places.

Why was Gregory Sorbara, who introduced this Bill in the House, suddenly removed as labor minister? Labor believes industry has put pressure on the Premier who, by the way, is supposed to represent all of Ontario and not just the corporate sector.

We in labor do not believe that an exercise similar to that of 1974 in Elliot Lake should have to occur at the expense of workers. However, with health and safety being the issue and an unnecessary number of work place deaths occurring in Ontario, a revolt should not come as a surprise to the Premier.
