The first meeting of a Sudbury- based group which is seeking formal registration for all professional geoscientists in Ontario was held recently at Sudbury, Ont. Ed Sawitzky, vice-chairman of the Sudbury Committee for the Registration of Professional Geoscientists, said the meeting drew more than 100 participants.
Guest speakers at the event where Dr. Vic Preto, manager of the British Columbia Ministry of Energy Mines & Petroleum Resources, and Dr. William Pearson, chairman of the committee.
Dr. Preto led off the discussion with a summary of the steps taken by British Columbia geoscientists in attaining their professional designation. Dr. Preto told of the group’s attempts to facilitate the registration process by seeking affiliation with the Association of Professional Engineers of Ontario (APEO). The initial response from the APEO has been favorable, said Preto.
Apart from concerns regarding mobility, qualification requirements, and costs incurred for registration, the overall response from geoscientists attending the meeting was favorable.
