On The Move (December 01, 1988)

Dr Raj Singhal of the Canada Centre for Mineral and Energy Technology (canmet) has been awarded a District Proficiency Medal by the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. Singhal, one of Canada’s foremost technology watchdogs, is head of advanced mining technology at canmet’s Coal Research Laboratories in Devon, Alta. The medal was presented in recognition of his significant contributions to the Canadian mining industry through applied research and technology transfer. The names of the first group of persons to be inducted into the Canadian Mining Hall of Fame will be announced at the inaugural dinner on Jan 9, 1989, in Toronto. At the inaugural dinner, in the Royal York Hotel, 12 individuals will be cited for their outstanding accomplishments in mining in Canada (10 will be cited posthumously). William James, chairman of Falconbridge Ltd., will be the keynote speaker. The Canadian Mining Hall of Fame will consist of a display unit of portraits of persons inducted with citations recalling their exceptional contribution to Canada’s mining industry. The display unit will be available for showing at mining events in Canada staged by national and provincial mining associations and organizations. Sponsors include: The Mining Association of Canada; the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada; the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy; and Northern Miner Press Ltd. Carl Nickels, Jr. is retiring as president, chief operating officer and board member of M.A. Hanna Co., which is based in Cleveland, Ohio. He is also retiring as chairman and president of Hanna’s iron ore affiliate Iron Ore Co. of Canada. David Jennings has been appointed president and chief executive officer of Vancouver-based Quartz Mountain Gold Corp. Dr Heinz Schimmelbusch has been named deputy chairman of Metallgesell– schaft A.G.
