Oil shales studied in New Brunswick

“New Brunswick oil shales are the most extensive and highest grade of any in Canada,” said Morris Green. Although not as large as the oil shale reserves in the western United States, the uncertain future supply of oil makes the New Brunswick reserves potentially valuable, he said.

Government labs are doing some of the tests and a bulk sample was sent to Brazil to be processed in the only continuously operating shale extraction plant in the western hemisphere. Initial results look good, said the minister.

“The next step in the development strategy is to decide whether to undertake preliminary design and cost estimates for a demonstration-scale plant.”

In addition to being a source of oil, the shales may also prove useful in asphalt.
