OGS uncovers prospective anomalies

A lake sediment survey in the English River-Graham-Wawang Lake area, northwest of Thunder Bay, Ont., has identified areas with elevated concentrations of platinum, palladium and rare earth elements.

The survey outlines 21 areas where geochemical anomalies occur in the region.

“Several of the anomalies are particularly interesting [owing to their] extremely high levels of rare earth elements, uranium and iron,” says Richard Dyer, a geoscientist with the Ontario Geological Survey (OGS).

Also, the geochemical makeup of the area is said to be prospective for Olympic Dam-style mineralization (named after a large Australian deposit containing copper, rare earth elements, gold and uranium).

The OGS is engaged in more than 24 field projects investigating Ontario’s geology and mineral potential. This year, the survey will spend $7.8 million on 90 geoscience projects across the province.
