Sixteen employees of Ontario’s Ministry of Northern Development and Mines recently took up positions at the Ontario Geological Society’s (OGS) “advance office” in Sudbury, Ont.
The OGS is set next year to move into the $53-million Mines and Minerals Research Centre under construction on a 14-acre site at the Laurentian University campus.
“The Sudbury advance office is a meaningful way of introducing the organization to our host community and vice versa,” said Ontario Mines Minister Gilles Pouliot.
The Sudbury advance office is staffed mainly by Toronto-based geologists who volunteered to move early, the ministry said.
The OGS provides information on Ontario’s geology and mineral resources to encourage exploration, provide a basis for land-use planning, aid in the development of non-renewable resource policies and conduct environmental studies.
In addition to the OGS, the new research centre will house the Ontario Ministry of Labor’s testing laboratory and technical support staff for its mining health and safety branch.
