Obituary William Bawden

William E. Bawden, a former chief engineer in the 1950s and 60s of the then-Ontario Department of Mines, inspection branch, has died at Port Hope, Ont., at age 90.

A 1926 mining engineering graduate of Queen’s University, Kingston, Bawden spent some 15 years in exploration, development and supervisory work with several companies before joining the Ontario mines department in 1941.

He was with Inco Ltd. at Sudbury during the 1930s, and was mine superintendent at Elchi Gold Mines from 1938 until joining the government department in 1941. His first job with the department was as mines inspector, at Kirkland Lake and later Port Arthur.

He then served as senior mining inspector and assistant chief inspector in the department until 1952, when he was named chief engineer. Bawden retired in 1964, and worked for a time as a consultant following his retirement.

He is survived by his wife, Irene Caldwell, of Port Hope, a daughter Carol, a son James, six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
