The owner of Diamond Indicator Processing, Roy Saukko, died unexpectedly at his residence in Thunder Bay, Ont. He was 59.
Saukko was born in Toronto and later attended the University of Toronto. He was employed by Falconbridge for 28 years as an exploration geologist and also worked on various diamond exploration projects. In addition, he helped discover the NBU-Sturgeon Lake copper-zinc deposit northeast of Ignace, Ont. A memorial fund has been set up at Lakehead University in Thunder Bay. The funds will be used to provide an award to a suitable candidate specializing in exploration geology.
Saukko was a member of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy & Petroleum and the Society of Professional Engineers.
