Obituary Ralph Mitchell

Mitchell was born in Toronto on Dec 13, 1913. He graduated from the University of Toronto in 1937 with a B.A.Sc. in mining.

That spring he went west to Sherridon, Man., to work for Sherritt Gordon Mines.

Mitchell achieved the usual engineering and supervisory training till he became a mine captain. He took over the job of chief engineer from the early 1940s until 1951.

He had a major part in the planning of the move of Sherritt’s plant and town to Lynn Lake. In due course, he and his family took their house along and Mitchell was again chief engineer for the construction and development of the new operations.

In 1965, the Keewatin Community College was starting in The Pas. Mitchell left Sherritt and took on the job of setting up the course for mining technologists. Many of his students mine in western Canada today. For many years he was vice-principal of the school. In 1978, he retired to live in The Pas.
