Obituary: R.W.S. Kirkland

R.W.S. (Bob) Kirkland, a pioneer geologist during the development of the Quebec-Labrador iron ranges, died recently in Calgary. Born and raised in Wilkie, Sask., he graduated with a B.Sc degree in geological engineering from the University of Saskatchewan in 1946. Graduate degrees, including his doctorate, were completed at McGill in Montreal.

Following graduation in 1950, he continued with Labrador Mining and Exploration, the company he worked for during his summer field days. At the Iron Ore Co of Canada, he became Chief Engineer at Knob Lake and later manager of the Sept Iles terminal.

In 1966, the Kirkland family moved to Toronto, where Bob continued his education, attending the School of Business Administration at the University of Toronto. In 1967, he joined the Business Development Group at Imperi al Oil, which later became the minerals division of Esso Resources.

Highly respected as a member of the mining community, Bob is remembered for his loyal friendships, intellectual ability and integrity. His contributions to his church and community are also well known by those who worked with him.

He is survived by his wife Sheila, his son and daughter and two grandchildren.
