Obituary John Cole

John Younglove Cole, mining executive and lawyer, died recently in Redwood City, Calif. He was 89.

Cole, a mining developer since 1925, discovered and staked the Cole gold mine, thus contributing to the founding of the towns of Cole and Red Lake, Ont. He was later made postmaster of the town of Cole, Ont.

He practised law in New York City and California. As a lawyer, Cole served legal aid in the family courts of New York City. He was a member of the New York State Bar, California State Bar, U.S. Supreme Court Bar, Harvard Law School Association and various federal court bar associations.

Born in San Francisco, Calif., Cole came from a pioneer family — the first landowners in the U.S. (Cole Hill, Plymouth, Mass.). As a boy, he attended the first log cabin school in Cobalt, Ont., in 1904, where one teacher taught all classes in one room. After he graduated from Haileybury High School in Ontario, Cole continued his studies at Harvard University, Harvard Law School, and J.D. and Fordham Law School in New York.

Also, Cole instituted the concept of the Alaska Highway and Atlantic air bases July 2, 1940, and was acknowledged by the president of the U.S.
