Obituary — Janet Springer

A senior scientist with the Ontario Ministry of Northern Development and Mines (MNDM), Janet Springer died recently in an automobile accident near Sudbury. She was 57.

A native of England, she spent her early childhood in Sri Lanka (then known as Ceylon). At university in London and Norway, Springer researched metamorphic and structural geology, earning her Ph.D from London’s Imperial College in 1961. For her work at Oslo University, she was presented with a Reusch Medal. Post-doctoral studies followed.

From 1969 to 1974, she worked with the Geological Survey of Canada and then joined the Ontario Geological Survey in Toronto. In 1985, Springer moved to Sudbury and for several years focused her attention on mineral development opportunities in northern Ontario. In 1991, she joined the mining and land management branch of MNDM as co-ordinator of a commodities program.
