The former chairman of Southern Peru Copper Corp., Frank W. Archibald, has died at the age of 67 in Corpus Christi, Tex. Southern Peru Copper, based in New York, is the largest copper mining enterprise in Peru.
Archibald, who had also been a vice-president of Asarco Inc., which owns 52.3% of Southern Peru Copper, began his career as a technical assistant and metallurgist at the El Paso smelter of Asarco in 1940.
He was elected vice-president of Asarco in 1967, and became chairman and chief executive officer of Southern Peru in 1968. In 1976 he received the Peruvian government’s highest civilian award, El Gran Comendador, and in 1985 was named Man of the Year by the Copper Club, an international organization representing all segments of the copper industry.
