Francoise Drolet, co-founder of the Order of Sancta Barbara, has died.
Drolet and husband Jean-Paul, a mining engineer and former assistant deputy minister of mines and resources, founded the award in 1967 to recognize the contribution of women to the welfare of mining in Canada.
Modelled after Sancta Barbara, the patron saint of miners, the medal was designed and crafted in enamel by Drolet. It was first awarded by the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum in 1968.
Drolet is survived by Jean-Paul, to whom she had been married for 50 years.
