Obituary Eugenia Campbell

On a farm 14 miles north of Rossburn, Man., Dec 7, 1910, she was born to Ukrainian immigrants Oksana and Mychalo Wonitowy.

In 1928 she answered an ad for a girl to go to Gold Pines to work in a store. There she met George Whitney Campbell, a First World War veteran, turned prospector and after a two-month courtship, they were married the evening of March 5, 1929, in Sioux Lookout.

“My mother thought I had really gone crazy when I came to this far off place and married a prospector. She had a farmer picked out for me,” she once said.

In the 1930s, Eugenia herself held a prospector’s licence and often worked with her husband lugging the bags of rock samples home.

Finally, in 1943, George struck gold as one of the stakers of the Campbell mine. As Eugenia put it, “Then we made up for all the lean years.”

On Feb 27, 1948, George died suddenly at age 49.

She was a widow at 37 and soon realized very little money remained and so she sold off the luxuries.

In later years, she was appreciative of the pension and help Campbell mine gave her.
