Charles P. Girdwood, former general manager of the Dome gold mine in South Porcupine and a former vice-president and director of Dome Mines, died August 8 in hospital at Ottawa. He was 78.
Before joining the Dome mine in 1939 as an assistant mining engineer, he was associated with several mining ventures including Canadian Malartic Gold Mines in Quebec and the O’Brien mine in Cobalt, Ont.
In 1954 he became general manager of the Dome mine. In 1963 he was made vice president of Dome Mines, now Placer Dome, and in 1967 became a director of Dome Mines.
He was also a director of Sigma Mines (Quebec), a Dome subsidiary, and was a commissioner of the Ontario Northland Railway. Since 1978 he acted as a consultant for Dome Mines. He was involved in many community organizations in the Timmins area and was highly respected in the community.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Edna.
