Andre Laurin, chief executive officer of Societe Quebecoise D’Exploration Miniere (SOQUEM), died suddenly on March 7. He was 62. Laurin, who received a doctorate in geology from Laval University in 1956, was recognized for his efforts to stimulate exploration in Quebec. During his years as a regional geologist for Quebec’s Department of Mines, he helped develop a new method of compiling geological data. Later, as director of the Mineral Research Division, he led the geophysics and geochemistry sectors in a period of sustained growth.
Born in Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue, Que., Laurin worked for the Department of Mines for 32 years before becoming president and chief executive officer of SOQUEM in 1988. His efforts with the department led to the formation of a complete geoscientific data base for Quebec.
As well as serving a term as president of the Canadian Geoscientific Council in 1986, Laurin was a member of several professional associations.
In 1985, Laurin was granted the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy’s A.O. Dufresne award and in 1987 he received the Distinguished Service award from the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada.
