The founder of Nelson Machinery, Jack Henry McMullen Greenwood, died recently at age 87.
Greenwood was born at the Hudson’s Bay trading post of Lac Seul, Ont., and began working for that company at the age of 13, after the death of his father.
After a number of years overseeing the Bay’s northern British Columbia posts, which involved travel by dog team and pack train, Greenwood went into business for himself. He settled in Nelson, B.C., where he founded Nelson Machinery in 1938.
The company sold mining equipment and supplies, and was also involved in the liquidation of closed mines and mills. More than 50 such liquidations were conducted from Alaska to Arizona, from Vancouver Island to Newfoundland. Greenwood moved his company and family to Vancouver in 1954. He is survived by his wife, Eilleen; son, Jack; daughter, Dawne; and two sisters and a brother.
