Noted mining engineer Philip Sydney Broadhurst died recently in Toronto. He was 79.
Broadhurst graduated from Queen’s University in 1938 with a B.Sc. degree in mining engineering. After the Second World War, he became manager at Lunward Gold Mines (later Goldlund) and was involved in underground development. Then he joined Coldstream Copper Mines in 1952 and Gulch Mines in 1954. With Robert Halet and Michael Ogden, Broadhurst formed a consulting firm in 1955. From 1956 to 1965, the firm served clients who conducted exploration surveys in Ireland, Sweden, Guyana and Jamaica.
He also worked for Zenmac Metal Mines (1965-71), Renabie Gold Mines (1975-76) and Goldlund-Camreco (1976-82).
Broadhurst is often remembered as one who discovered the original Zenmac zinc mine at Schreiber, Ont. Later Corp. Falconbridge Copper optioned the property from Zenmac Metal Mines and found the Winston Lake orebody, now owned and operated by Minnova Inc.
