OBITUARIES Norman Ursel led Noble Peak north

Norman Ursel, president of Noble Peak Resources and Norman H. Ursel Associates, died in Toronto, Ont., May 29. He was 63. Ursel is best known for his pio 0000,0600 neering activities in Canada’s far north. Under his direction, Noble Peak acquired and developed an impressive portfolio of precious and base metal properties in the Northwest Territories as well as Quebec and Utah.

A miner for more than 30 years, he was involved in projects throughout Canada, the western U.S., Australia and South Africa. He participated in the Elliot Lake uranium development and other projects as an engineering associate with Franc R. Joubin and Associates.

Born in Regina, Sask., Ursel obtained a B.Sc. in ceramic engineering at the University of Saskatchewan in 1949 and a certificate in hydrometallurgy from the University of Utah in 1972.

He wrote for The Engineering Journal and was an associate editor at Engineering Digest.

Ursel was a member of The Association of Professional Engineers, Ont., The Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy and the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada.
