OBITUARIES — Lionel York

A native of South Africa who came to Canada in 1958, Lionel York, died recently. He was 61.

A professional engineer and hydrologist, his work took him to Saskatchewan, where he was involved in the technical aspect of sinking shafts through the overburden at the potash projects of IMC Fertilizer in the Esterhazy area.

Another job took him to the Aleutian Islands (the southern boundary of the Bering Sea), where he worked with the Canadian and U.S. atomic energy commissions in the testing of subterranean nuclear devices.

York was involved in grassroots mining exploration in northern Ontario and northwestern Quebec through a couple of his junior companies. He was a longtime member of the Engineers Club of Toronto.
