Donald Wagg, a pioneer in airborne geophysics, has died. He was 75.
Born in Regina, Sask., in 1923, Wagg obtained a degree in geophysics from the University of Toronto in 1950 after serving with the Royal Canadian Air Force during the Second World War.
His professional career began with Newmont Exploration in 1951. A year later, he was appointed chief geophysicist at O’okiep Copper Corp. in South Africa. In 1955, Wagg returned to Canada to head the newly formed airborne geophysics division at Rio Canada Exploration. While there, he helped develop a wing-mounted electromagnetic survey system.
In 1961, Wagg joined Canadian Aero Mineral Surveys, moving to Geoterrex in 1969 to become that company’s vice-president.
Wagg is a past president of the Canadian Exploration Geophysicists Society and, in 1973 and 1974, served as vice-president of the Society of Exploration Geophysicists.
Wagg is survived by Dorothy, his wife of 52 years, and six children.
