Police in Japan are investigating an accident at a nuclear power reactor in Mihama, about 330 km west of Tokyo, that killed four workers and injured seven others. Police say there are indications safety may have been compromised in an effort to cut costs.
Plant managers told investigators the steam pipe that burst and sprayed workers was overdue for an inspection, which was slated for later this month.
The four workers were killed when searing steam escaped from a ruptured pipe in a building that houses turbines for a reactor at the Mihama plant.
No radiation leaked as a result of the accident.
