Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) and the Ontario Ministry of Northern Development & Mines (MNDM) are jointly funding a DVD designed to educate Ontario aboriginals about the mining industry.
Slated for release this fall, the video will take viewers through various phases of the mining cycle, including early exploration, mine construction, operation, mine closure, and reclamation. An information package will be included with each DVD.
The video will contain interviews with representatives from First Nations, as well as on-site interviews company representatives. The aboriginal-firm Chikk Communications, based in Winnipeg, Man., is producing the video.
“Mineral exploration can help create a better life for northern Canadians, particularly aboriginal people,” says John Efford, minister of Natural Resources Canada. “This video and other information products will help aboriginal communities identify opportunities and make informed decisions about their participation in mineral-development activities.”
NRCan and MNDM will distribute the video to aboriginal communities throughout northern Ontario.
The video could eventually be used to help aboriginal communities elsewhere in Canada and in other countries.
