Natural Resources Canada (NRC) and the Canadian Association of Mining Equipment and Services for Export (CAMESE) have collaborated to publish an 84-page report on how mining suppliers contribute to the national economy.
The 84-page report, titled Canadian Suppliers of Mining Goods and Services: Links between Canadian Mining Companies and Selected Sectors, is designed to help federal policy-makers determine ways to stimulate the sector’s growth.
Until now, few data on the mining supply sector were available. NRC and CAMESE have corrected that by surveying more than 600 companies.
“We finally have something on paper, and it’s a lot more than we had,” says John Baird, CAMESE’s managing director.
Although the report was compiled over the past year, its origins stem from discussions that began in the early 1990s. Baird says CAMESE started to influence policy-making in Ottawa in 1993 and that this report will help bring about further improvements.
The report estimates that the demand to keep the world’s mines in operation is US$200 billion per year and that the value of goods and services for the construction of new mines is currently US$50 billion.
About 2,200 firms in Canada advertise specialized mining goods and services, and hundreds more attract clients without advertising.
