Noront putting six drills on Newfoundland, Ontario claims

“Few junior companies today are able to carry out such a program,” says Noront President Richard Nemis, who adds that this drilling is scheduled to begin immediately after the New Year under a contract with Midwest Drilling of Winnipeg.

While most of this focuses on gold, hopes are high for what is described as a “significantly high- grade” antimony discovery on extensive holdings in the Gander area of Newfoundland. This consists of a series of massive stibnite veins assaying up to 65.8% antimony within a 200-ft zone of alteration.

There are two other separate antimony showings within a total strike length of known mineralization in outcrop extending for 2.6 miles. This mineralization and the regional geology are said to be comparable to the antimony deposits in the Hunan province of China, which contain over 50% of the world’s known antimony reserves.

In addition to the antimony discoveries on which considerable surface work has been done, four new gold discoveries were made during the past prospecting season in the Duder Lake area of Newfoundland. These occur within a mineralized shear zone in altered gabbro extending over a strike length of three miles. The intention is to drill two of these gold projects at this time, Nemis tells The Northern Miner. One of these yielded grab samples up to 0.81 oz, with a channel sample assaying 0.39 oz across 8.6 ft.

In Ontario, three separate gold projects are to be drilled including a 57-claim group in McCron Twp. in the Hemlo camp, completely surrounded by holdings of LAC Minerals. Target here is a large coincident untested gold soil and EM anomaly. On the Chisholm Island project, 19 miles west of Sioux Narrows, a drill hole to test an EM anomaly made a significant massive sulphide discovery assaying 0.42 oz gold per ton, 1.42 oz silver and 0.65% copper over 7.9 ft. The drill was subsequently removed and a large staking program initiated to protect the area now consists of 231 claims.

The third Ontario project is in the Uchi Lake area where the company has just recently made an agreement in principle with Noranda under which it can earn a 50% interest in 330 claims in the Birch Lake sector, 65 miles east of Red Lake. Within this group is the Horseshoe Island deposit which hosts 893,508 tons grading 0.14 oz gold. One mile to the north, lenses of sulphide mineralization have been picked up containing platinum-palladium-gold values, together with copper and nickel.

This Uchi greenstone belt is in for a lot of activity this coming season, with quite a few companies already moving in, Nemis says.
