Noranda’s zinc output declines

Forecast zinc concentrate output this year from the mines of Noranda (TSE) has been reduced by more than was previously announced.

A reduction of 90,000, rather than 70,000, tonnes is now expected. The decline is the result of the extension of a temporary shutdown of Noranda’s Heath Steele mine in New Brunswick.

Production for the year should reach 480,000 tonnes of zinc contained in concentrate — a 16% decline from 1992. Zinc is produced by the Matagami mine in Quebec, Brunswick Mining & Smelting and Heath Steele in New Brunswick, and the Geco mine and Kidd Creek operation (Falconbridge) in Ontario.
