Noranda grows recycling business

Noranda Recycling (Malaysia), a new unit of Noranda (NRD.LV-T) has begun operating in Penang, Malaysia, expanding the company’s worldwide electronics recycling business.

The company’s annual gross value of recyclable raw materials is already more than $300 million.

The Malaysian office will provide a recycling service for electronics manufacturers in Asia and produce feed for Noranda’s copper and precious-metal-bearing scrap metal business.

Noranda operates four electronic-recycling plants in the United States and one in Canada. The scrap will be sampled in one of these facilities before being transported to the Horne smelter in Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec.

About 15% of the Horne smelter’s feed is recycled material.

Noranda and Falconbridge (FL-T) are both major recyclers of copper and precious metals. In addition to Horne, Noranda operates a refinery in Montreal-Est; Falconbridge operates smelters in Sudbury and Timmins.

Shareholders will vote on the proposed Noranda-Falconbridge merger at the end of June.
