Noranda curtails output of zinc at Brunswick mine

Noranda Mining & Exploration, an affiliate of Noranda, has announced that production at its Brunswick Mining division in New Brunswick will be reduced for the remainder of the year.

Seismic activity at the zinc mine, situated near Bathurst, has called into question the safety of the operation. The mine plan and ground control program are currently being revised.

Production is expected to fall to 8,500 tonnes per day, down from 9,600 tonnes per day at the beginning of the year. Production of zinc concentrate during the first six months of 1996 was 230,000 tonnes, down from 480,000 tonnes produces in previous years. Production of bulk concentrate also slipped.

The mine is expected to produce beyond 2010.

Noranda is one of the world’s leading producers of zinc, with five mines and two metallurgical facilities.
