NLT Australia, a subsidiary of NL Technologies, has developed a Radio Frequency (RF) reader for tracking personnel and assets underground, wirelessly.
The Northern Light Digital Network, the first of its kind in the world, is a wireless local area network (WLAN) similar to the wireless network used by computers — except that it’s geared to withstand the rigours of an underground environment.
A fully operational RF reader would allow real-time, two-way communication between the underground and surface.
The digital network could also be used to track assets and workers underground, allowing rescue teams on the surface to direct workers away from hazardous areas in the event of a cave-in.
NL Technologies launched its Northern Light Digital Network in 2004. Along with the RF reader, NLT has also developed the Messenger Cap Lamp for two-way, real-time text messaging.
