Nfld’s 12th annual open house

The 12th Annual Open House and Review of Activities by the Newfoundland department of mines is scheduled to be held Nov 3 at the Newfoundland Hotel in St. John’s.

The meeting is designed to make the mineral industry and the general public more aware of the field and office activities of the government.

In the past, most companies, prospectors and promoters exploring in the province have been represented.

The meetings are being held in conjunction with the 35th annual meeting of the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (CIM). The Open House starts the first day of the 3-day CIM meeting. Guest speakers include Pat MacCulloch, vice-president, BP Resources Canada of Toronto and Ted Henley of St. John’s.

The CIM meetings will include sessions on mineral exploration in the province as well as sessions on mining operations and offshore oil and gas. Scientists from the Newfoundland mines department will also make technical presentations in the CIM exploration sessions related to their field programs.

This year the CIM meeting will focus on development opportunities in Newfoundland and Labrador in the 1990’s. The plenary session will focus in depth on the theme of this year’s meeting “Mineral Development in the ’90s.”

Speakers will include: Peter Steen, president of Corona Corp; Paul Dean, assistant deputy minister, Newfoundland department of mines; Bob Martin, vice-president operations, Iron Ore Company of Canada; and Michel Lefebvre, vice- president copper group, Noranda Minerals. These speakers will give presentations and focus on gold, industrial minerals, copper (base metals) and iron ore. Gold is again the principal focus of many of the displays at the mines meeting with considerable interest in the provinces’s base metal and industrial mineral potential.
