NEWS ROUNDUP — Strip mine to be subject of hearings

The Nova Scotia government has postponed development of a strip coal mine near the Westray coal mine site that claimed the lives of 26 miners in May.

Provincial Environment Minister Terry Donahoe has decided to stage public hearings and perform an environmental assessment. The hearings and assessment are expected to take nine months to complete.

Toronto-based Curragh (TSE), which applied for a mining licence in March, is owner of both the proposed strip mine and the closed Westray mine, which is the subject of an official inquiry.
