NEWS ROUNDUP — Some Westray charges withdrawn

More than half of the 52 charges laid by the government of Nova Scotia against the operator and four managers of the closed Westray coal mine have been dropped.

Operator Curragh (TSE) and four managers have pleaded not guilty to 18 of the charges which deal with safety matters.

An explosion in May at the coal mine near Plymouth killed 26 miners. The government dropped 34 of the charges because it says they would have interfered with an investigation by the RCMP.
