A toxic gas leak in the Sudbury, Ont., area during the summer of 1990 has cost Falconbridge $180,000 in fines.
The nickel-copper producer was convicted in a Sudbury court on six of nine counts under the Environmental Protection Act and fined $30,000 for each of the infractions. The company says it will appeal the ruling. The infractions relate to the escape of sulphur trioxide from a plant into the town of Nickel Centre, east of Sudbury, causing coughing and wheezing among residents.
