NEWS ROUNDUP — Brunswick axes staff

Brunswick Mining and Smelting (TSE) has laid off 32 hourly rated employees and 26 staff members at its base metals mine in Bathurst, N.B.

Forty-six employees had already left the company voluntarily. The current workforce totals 1,026.

On an upbeat note, Brunswick has brought its lead smelter in Belledune, N.B., back on stream after a 6-week shutdown. It was closed in November as a result of a shortage of lead concentrates.

Smelting Vice-president Michel Garon says current supplies of lead concentrate are sufficient for the whole of 1994.

Despite a 2-month shutdown this summer, the operation is expected to produce 78,000-80,000 tonnes of refined lead this year.
