NEWS ROUNDUP — Barrick makes changes at top

As expected, Barrick Gold (ABX-T) has reached into its own talent pool to fill a vacancy left by the surprise departure of president Paul Melnuk.

Randall Oliphant was appointed president and chief executive of the large gold miner, while John Carrington was appointed vice-chairman, in addition to his role as chief operating officer.

An accountant by profession, Oliphant joined Barrick in 1987 and became its chief financial officer in 1994. He has been a director since 1997. Fellow accountant Jamie Sokalsky, vice-president and treasurer, is now Barrick’s chief financial officer.
