NEWS ROUNDUP — Antofagasta hits commissioning stage

Commissioning of the US$1.4-billion Los Pelambres mine in Chile is under way.

British-based owner Antofagasta Holdings reports that ore is being fed into the concentrator, and copper concentrate is expected to be shipped overseas beginning in December or January. In March 2000, the mine is expected to achieve full annual capacity of 271,000 tonnes of concentrate. The mine will produce at this rate for five years, then fall back to 246,000 tonnes over the next 25 years.
